Local SEO is not a marketing tactic. It’s a business strategy. It establishes trust and credibility with both search engines and homeowners. It can position your company as the #1 result that gets 27% of clicks. Or, the top result in the Map Pack that receives 23% of clicks.

The good news is that a lot of roofing companies are doing it wrong. This gives your company a competitive advantage if it can do it right.

What follows is not theory. It is a practical, field-tested playbook for dominating local search in your market. It includes five of many ways to improve local SEO for roofing companies that are often ignored or overlooked. Let’s dig in!

Google Business Profile Optimization

The single most important step to improve local SEO for your roofing company is to optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP).

First, make sure the information is accurate. Set ‘Roofing contractor’ as your primary category, and if you do siding, gutters or windows, add those in the ‘Additional Categories’ section. Fill out every field. Set your service area. Add photos. Add a “Request A Quote” button to your profile. Use the Services section to share detailed descriptions with keywords relevant to your business. Set up an FAQ section. The more information that is easily accessible from search, the better.

When you receive a review, respond to it. Your response should be 3-4 sentences and include keywords related to the work completed. The boilerplate “Thanks for choosing us!” is insufficient. Try “Thank you for choosing <insert company name> for your roof replacement, <insert customer name>! We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. The Mountain Pine shingles you chose complement the home perfectly, and the limited lifetime warranty has you covered for as long as you live there. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need maintenance down the line.”

Lastly, the posts and photo sections of your GBP are an opportunity to share fresh content on a regular basis. Before and after photos, product promotions, and company updates boost visibility and signal to Google that you are keeping things up to date.

Maintain A Consistent NAP

As Biggie said, this rule is so underrated. Make sure your NAP (name, address and phone number) are consistent and appear exactly the same across every channel. When I say exactly, I mean exactly. If you spell out the word Avenue on your GBP, it must appear as Avenue (not Ave.) on every other profile. If your GBP has a suite number, every other listing needs the suite number.

Search for your company’s name and review each result. Your website, social media pages, Yelp listing, Better Business Bureau, and every other directory your business is featured on must appear exactly the same as it is on your Google Business Profile.

Inconsistent or outdated NAP information will confuse search engines and potential customers. This can lead to a decline in local search visibility, and ultimately, cost you leads.

Create Location-Specific Service Pages

Done right, location-specific landing pages are a super strong SEO strategy for roofing contractors.

Each page must contain unique information that is relevant to the area. For instance, a page dedicated to Chicago Roof Repair should reference weather challenges such as harsh winters, ice dams, and spring hail storms, common to the Chicagoland area.

It should feature photos of roofing work completed in the city, with mentions of local landmarks and communities. It should feature a clear call to action such as “Get Your Free Chicago Roof Inspection”. The goal is for a homeowner to feel like this page was written specifically for them.

Outside of local SEO, these landing pages are especially useful for Google Ads campaigns targeting those areas. Typical landing pages for the home improvement industry clock in around 7%. Based on previous campaigns, we estimate these location-specific landing pages to improve conversion rates up to 80%. In addition, companies with 40+ landing pages generate 12x more leads than those with 5 or fewer.

Lean Into Local Link Building

Link building is one of the most valuable SEO tactics- and local link building can give your roofing company a clear advantage in search engine rankings.

Start with your local Chamber of Commerce. Yes, there will be a membership fee. But $200-$400 to establish credibility in your community is a small price to pay for the visibility and link to your website.

Sponsorships offer another opportunity for hyper-local link building. You can sponsor an event, or a sports team, and ask them to link to your site. Even if their site does not see a large volume of traffic to refer visitors to your site, Google will recognize the link as a signal of trust and relevance within your local community.

Partnerships with insurance agents and real estate professionals can lead to valuable links as well. Even other service-based businesses may be an opportunity for cross-referral arrangements, whether that is through a referral page listing local businesses, or guest posting on their blog.

If you’re a certified installer for brands like GAF and Owens Corning, you can be listed on their local contractor pages. These are high-authority domains with highly relevant links that serve as trust signals to homeowners and search engines. The corporate site may not be local, but the homeowners looking for a contractor in your zip code are.

Generate Reviews Regularly

Reviews do far more than build trust with homeowners- they are a direct ranking factor in Google local search algorithm.

Google determines how to rank a local business by analyzing relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews heavily influence prominence. The more reviews you have, the velocity at which you receive these reviews, the more frequently your business appears in search results and the higher you rank in the Map Pack.

But volume of reviews is only part of the story. As we mentioned earlier in the GBP optimization section, the content of your responses to reviews matters. Using keywords, city names, and thoughtful descriptions of work completed in your response adds tremendous value.

To increase the likelihood of a customer leaving a review, we recommend follow up emails immediately after a job, QR codes on print materials, and using the reviews link in your GBP profile to make the process quicker and easy for your customer.

Successful SEO Starts Here

Success doesn’t happen overnight. SEO is a long-term strategy to grow visibility and trust, but every step you take compounds. Each improvement to your Google Business Profile, each review you earn, each location page you build, is moving your business forward even if it’s not immediately apparent.
